The
Sixth Cadwallader Annual Memorial Lecture
The
Lecture “Challenges Facing the Shipping Industry in
the 21st Century” took place on 15th September 2003
at Lloyd’s of London. The stellar panel was headed by William
O’Neil, the then Secretary General of the IMO, with Chris
Horrocks - Secretary General, International Chamber of Shipping,
Fotis Karamitsos – Director, European Commission Directorate
General for Energy and Transport, and Dr Peter Swift of INTERTANKO,
as guest speakers.
Standing at the threshold of this new millennium, a serious evaluation
of where the future of international shipping lies is crucial in
order to foster a more effective, environmentally-friendly, safer
and efficient industry. All members of the panel discussed fundamental
issues which would need to be addressed on a global basis. In summary
these were: The need for a uniform regulatory approach geared to
maintain a cohesive international regulatory regime; The need for
standards in technological advancement in ships’ structures;
Continued environmental protection policies and the designation
of places of refuge; Commitment to ‘quality shipping’
by each of the interdependent sectors of the shipping industry;
Quality recruitment; Policies in the fight against terrorism; Equal
terms of competition between operators; Improvement in efficiency
and competitiveness in world trade; The role and influence of the
open registers. For the event, the Centre organised a video conference
link with the University of Cape Town where a distinguished audience
led by Professor John Hare sat in and participated in the Q &
A session. The names of the two winners of the Centre’s Essay
Prize Competition were announced by Alistair Groom of CTC.
